Marriage Amendment Fails

Alison Knezevich reports that the partisan attempt to bring avoid the committee consideration of the so-called "Marriage Protection Amendment" failed.  This amendment would not have just banned marriage equality, it would have prevented civil unions.  Her Gazette article is here. Fairness is West Virginia's Business

A front page article in the State Journal by Gretchen Stone makes the business case for the Employment Non-Discrimination Bill, SB 238.   Back in February, the CEO of West Virginia Media, the State Journal's parent company, wrote an editorial making it clear that the marriage amendment was "political horse rubbish that takes our attention away from making West Virginia the absolute best it can be. "

WV Senate Passes SB 238

The WV Senate has just passed SB 238, legislation ending discrimination in employment and housing based on sexual orientation. This is a huge step forward.

We need your help to get it to Governor Manchin's desk. But let's take a moment to extend an enormous amount of thanks to the sponsors of the bill: Senators McCabe, Kessler, Foster, Palumbo, Wells and Snyder, and to all of the right-minded Senators who voted for it.

Here are two things you can do to help:

  1. Sign up to receive updates from us.
  2. Tell your friends and family to sign up for Fairness West Virginia: the more voices we have, the
    more effective we can be.
  3. Consider donating to Fairness West Virginia to help us keep up the
    fight.
