It's about time this be added to the safe schools policy. I teach high school and I can tell you that I deal more with bullying because of sexual orientation than any other reason. These students need protected. It's their civil right!

ABSOLUTELY. When I attended Riverside High School from 2003-2007, I was constantly tortured for being gay. I wasn't even out of the closet to anyone until my junior year, but that didn't matter.

I had boys try to jump me many occasions. I also had a group of boys pee on my car, key my doors, and slash my tires.

The bullying has GOT to come to an end.

Thanks so much for the wonderful blog/article. I can honestly say I didn't know these comments were being made.

You've made some wonderful points especially about future gay men serving our state (even our country).

I'm surprised I found this website. I wish you folks could get the word out better--I'm stuck in Wheeling and had no idea 'Fairness WV' exists. There's no voice for GLBT people in the northern panhandle of WV. The bars are gone...there's no place to meet people like me. Where is everybody? How can I find a sense of community in a place like this?

@ charleen

"...straight people have to follow the same rules..."

No, they don't. They can and do talk openly about their relationships. They can mention wives, husbands, girlfriends and boyfriends and they will not be punished.

"why are you fighting so hard to end what has worked for decades?"

Why are you fighting so hard to keep bigotry, discrimination, and hatred alive? Obviously what's been going on for decades is not working.

Jeff Kessler and Natalie Tennant are the only two viable candidates as far as I am concerned. Those who do not approve of any special legislation for protection re: sexual orientation, as Charleston has seen fit to do, most fortunately, are simply hiding behind their inner prejudicial door; and never--even at gunpoint--would I consider ever voting for the rest of them for ANYTHING ever again, and most definitely never a Republican.

i have no problem with gay soldiers, and most soldiers i know feel the same way. no one contests the fact that gay or not, a soldier is still a soldier. what we contest is the fact that the military is a very manly institution. to this day, females still have to not only meet the standards for anything, but exceed them by far, just to be respected. so what would it be like for those soldiers who are gay? this policy protects them. it gives them the chance to be seen as just a soldier by their comrades. we fight for our place in the military daily. do you really think it would be any different for a homosexual? for me to be considered to be as good as the guy standing next to me, i have to be better than him in all respects. do you really want those gay soldiers to deal with that? i dont. i consider them just another soldier, but im a female, and as such, a minority, so i understand. but those guys i work with dont. they wouldnt. and they would be constantly looking at him wondering if he's checking them out in the shower. so why are we pushing an issue that isnt an issue? because it's not. the military does not discriminate against homosexuals. it just states that your sex life doesnt need to be brought to work with you. and straight people have to follow the same rules. and what is wrong with wanting to keep that equilibrium? why are you fighting so hard to end what has worked for decades?
