Fairness WV Applauds U.S. Senate Vote
on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal
Charleston, W. Va.-Fairness West Virginia, the leading LGBT rights group in the Mountain State, today praised Sen. Jay Rockefeller for voting to repeal “Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT).
“Today, Sen. Jay Rockefeller stood firmly with all of our troops in voting to repeal this unjust and discriminatory law. Along with Rep. Mollohan, they voted to promote our national security while guaranteeing equal rights. These two legislators, one of whom we are sad to soon lose, are truly statesmen,” said Stephen Skinner, president of Fairness WV.
“While we’re disappointed that Sen. Manchin did not vote on the legislation today, we’re confident we can work with him and his staff to ensure the new Senator understands the many challenges facing gay and lesbians West Virginians,” said Skinner.
“The people who voted against this legislation, including Reps. Nick Rahall and Shelley Moore Capito will be remembered in history only for the homophobia and bigotry behind their votes.”
Fairness WV delivered over 800 letters from West Virginians to Sen. Manchin’s Charleston, W.Va. and Washington, D.C. offices on Wednesday. His office has received hundreds of calls from his constituents urging him to end this policy.
